Kick Ass
Kick Ass (2010)
So Here it is, My first Review.
I would like to point out straight away that Kick Ass was in no way what i was expecting from the trailers. Perhaps i didn’t read enough into it, something that i do not like to do, i don’t want someone else’s opinion, critic or otherwise to cloud my own judgement. Or perhaps i assumed to much from trailers that can become diluted for television as the rating of a film increases. But it was so different from what i was expecting i came within two minuets of leaving the theatre.
I don’t want this to be see as a dig on what is a brilliant film. But when you expect teen comedy about a failing superhero and get (look away now before spoilers) man in industrial sized microwave it can be a shock to the system. That being said once my perception of what i was viewing changed this film becomes something brilliant.
I don’t want to fill this review with plot, if you like this you will want to see it for yourself you won’t want me to give you all the details. But what i will say is this, if you do not like violence then this film is not for you. The violence was the main thing that shocked me with Kick Ass and such things such as aforementioned man in giant microwave. It is graphic as i have seen in many 18 rated films, i think the line comes on where it passes from Comedy to full on Gore and if ever there was a film that toes the line, this is it.
Again i seam to be bashing so lets move on the the points that make this film the stand out comedy of the year so far. The acting is strong, Its great to see Christopher Mintz-Plasse give the performance that Superbad fans such as myself knew he is capable of, and may finally loose that McLovin name that he has been left with. Nicolas Cage Gives a solid performance as the batman styled “Big Daddy” and his original Adam West style dialogue gives his character a great presence when he is on screen. There are great performances littered through out this film, but my standout goes to Chloe Moretz, Her performance as “Hit-Girl” shows the potential in this young actress that we first saw in last years stand out rom com (500) days of summer.
I don’t think that Kick Ass will be racking up the award noms. But what it will get is a great reception from Viewers and set a benchmark that all future superhero films will have to live up to, This may be as close to superhero perfection as has ever been shown on screen, something gritty that we can really get our teeth in to.
Likes.
Great performances from a great cast
Storyline moved at pace and kept me interested throughout
Genuinely funny
Dislikes
The shock of the violence
Left me wanting more
Over all i Give Kick Ass 7/10. Funny, brutal, great storyline, probably should have been an 18, but probably as close to comic book film perfection as it is possible to get.
